Banda Aceh — Students of the Computational Linguistics class took part in an engaging discussion with Dr. William Tjhi from AI Singapore, exploring recent developments in artificial intelligence and language technology, particularly the development of ATLAS, a global language mapping initiative. The discussion session was arranged by Prof. Hammam, lecturer of the Computational Linguistics course, providing students with an opportunity to engage directly with an international expert working in the field of artificial intelligence and language technology.

During the session, Dr. William Tjhi shared insights into ATLAS, a global language mapping initiative being developed by AI Singapore and its partners. The initiative seeks to map and document the world’s linguistic diversity by leveraging advances in artificial intelligence and computational linguistics.

The discussion was conducted in an interactive and enthusiastic atmosphere. Students actively shared their ideas, asked questions, and discussed the projects they are currently working on as part of their learning in computational linguistics.

The interaction also left a positive impression on Dr. William. “I think Dr. William was so impressed with the class, the ideas and the projects they are working on,” Prof. Taufik noted, highlighting the enthusiasm and creativity demonstrated by the students throughout the session.

Prof. Taufik welcomed the opportunity for further discussion and collaboration with Dr. William Tjhi, noting that a more extended discussion would take place later this month during ICELTICs 2026.

“We will have a longer discussion at the end of this month when Dr. William is coming in person for ICELTICs 2026,” said Prof. Taufik.

The upcoming meeting is expected to provide an opportunity for deeper discussions on ATLAS, AI Singapore, and potential academic and research collaborations in artificial intelligence, computational linguistics, and language technology. The initiative reflects the commitment to enriching students’ learning experiences by connecting them with international researchers and practitioners and exposing them to the latest developments in AI and computational linguistics.
